Mise-en-scène Analysis
The Batman (2022)
Mise en scène is a French term that means "placing on stage," but in film, it refers to everything that appears in the frame. It encompasses all visual elements that give the story its creation and helps to convey meaning, mood, and themes to the audience. Essentially, mise en scène is the arrangement of everything that appears before the camera: lighting, set design, props, costumes, and the positioning of actors. It's a fundamental tool that filmmakers use to control how their audience perceives the world of the film, affecting the way they interpret characters, their motivations, and the narrative. To understand the 4 Ps of mise en scène (props, pov, posture, position), we chose to analyze the opening scene from The Batman (2022). The combination of shots in this scene gives the viewer a newfound perspective on this Batman, as this is the first time we see Robert Pattinson play the role.
